He commanded the army in Afghanistan in 1841-2 : forced the KJiybiir Pass, and relieved the garrison of Jellabad. For his military services he was made Field-Marshal and G.C.B., and received various foreign distinctions, the tlianksof Parlia- ment, and finally the baronetcy, but d. the same year.
