This family is said to have been seated at Wingfield in Suffolk antecedent to the Conquest. Sir Richard Wing- field, descended from the Suffolk family, was mareschal of Ireland xmder Elizabeth and James I, and was created Vise. Powerscourt in 1618, but died without issue. The peerage was, however, revived in 1665, in favour of the grandson of Sir Edw^ard Wingfield, who was cousin and nearest heir to Sir Richard, 1st Vise.
