Parsons,_ one of the lord justices of Ireland ; Sir ^Villiam's great-grandson was raised to the peerage, and his successor was creat. Earl of Rosse in 1718, a title which, however, expired at the death of the 2nd Earl in 1764 ; the present Peer derives his title from his great-grandfather's half-bro., on whom it was conferred with special remainder. The 3rd Earl, who was for more than 20 years an Irish rep. Peer and pres. of the Royal Society, was well iuiown for the improve- ments he effected in the construction of the telescope.
