Sir .John Eliot, was an energetic opponent of the coirrt temp. Charles I ; he d. and was buried in the Tower 1632. The 1st Baron Eliot assitmed the name of Craggs, and was grandson maternally of the Rt. Hon. James Craggs, Sec. of State femp. Geo. I. The 2nd Baron Eliot obtained the Earldom of St. Ger- mans, with remainder to his bro., the present Peer's grandfather. The 3rd Earl was ambas- sador to Spain, and concluded the " Eliot con- vention." respecting the treatment of prisoners durmg the Spanish civil war 1835 ; he held various offices of State, including those of Lord- Lieut, of Ireland, Lord Steward of the Household, Postmaster-General, etc., and sat in Parliament for Liskeard and East Cornwall.
