The 1st Baron Gower was eldest s. of Sir William Leveson Gower, who was one of the Duke of Monmouth's bail in 1083. The 2nd Earl Gower filled the office of Lord Pres. of the Council, and was advanced to the Marquisate of Stafford ; his s. and successor ! obtained the Dukedom after having married the i heiress of the 17th Earl of Sutherland, who became ' Countess of Sutherland in her own right upon her father's death.
