The present Peer's grandfather sue. his kinsman, the last Earl of Mountnorris, in the Viscounty and Barony only, being the lineal descendant of the 6th s. of 1st Vise., and all intermediate heirs having become extinct after flourishing for nearly 200 years. The titles of the present Peer were originally conferred upon Sir Francis An- nesley, Knt., whose eld. s. was advanced to the English peerage as Baron Annesley and Earl of Anglesey ; but this Earldom was lost by the dis- puted legitimacy of the 6th Earl's s., the English House of Lords deciding against the legitimacy of the claimant, while the Irish House of Lords decided in his favour : the English Earldom therefore became extin/ct, while the heir under the Irish decision sue. to the Irish titles, and was subsequently creat. Earl of Mountnorris. The only surviving sister of the last Earl Mountnorris m. Maj.-Gen. Norman Macleod, C.B., and their eld. s. took the name of Annesley, and sue. to the English and Irish estates.
