Received tlie title and pre- cedence of a Knight's widow 1891. — Catherine, o. dau. of Chivalier Jusey do Silva, Knt. of St. George the Great, and widow of the pliilanthropist Charles Henry de Soysa, J.P. for the Island, and a Sinhalese gentleman of Ceylon, upon whom the honour of knighthood would have been con- ferred but for his sudden death from hydrophobia in 1890. Mr. de Soysa, amongst other acts of munificence, founded and endowed the Prince and Princess of Wales' Colleges at Moratuwa, Ceylon, and a lying-in home and medical museum at Colombo, built the churches of Holy Emmanuel and St. Matthew's in Moratuwa, St. John's in Panadura, the Panadura Hosjaital, etc., contri- buted liberally towards all charities in Ceylon, opened many roads and erected rest-houses in different j^arts of the Island, contributed very largely to the Imperial Institute, and left a con- siderable sum to be distributed among London charities as a memento of his visit to England 1886.
