He devoted himself to experimental research, par- ticularly in connexion with the spectroscope and astrophysics, and was associated with the great discoveries of the 19th century in that branch of science. He did much towards determining by the analysis of light the composition of the heavenly bodies, and iir 1856 erected his own private obser- vatory at Tulse Hill, where the Roy.
