Johnson, Rector of White Lachington, Somer.set, and Emma, dau. of Thomas Brooke, H.E.I.G.S., and sister of the 1st Rajah. Sir James Brooke, K.C.B. B. 1829 ; m. 1869, his cousin Margaret, dau. of Clayton de Windt, of Blunsden Hall, Wilts ; ed. at Crewkerne Gram. Sch., and served for soine time in R.N., obtaining his lieutenancy ; sue. his uncle. Sir James Brooke ("Rajah Brooke "), as Rajah in 1868, and received the G. C.M.G. upon Sarawak being taken under the protectorate of Great Britain. The territory of Sarawak is situate on the north coast of the island of Borneo, and comprises about 50,000 square miles, with a population of about 500,000. The late Sir James Brooke was installed as Rajah in 1841 in return for services rendered in the suppres • sion of an insurrection, and obtained the recogni- tion of Sarawak as an independent State from the British Government in 1863.
