They have been characterised by W. E. Henley as ten delightful volumes," and they show Dumas almost at his best, as one of the greatest writers of narrative in all literature. He had published Monte Cristo, The Three Musketeers, Twenty Years After, La Dame de Monsoreau, Les Quarante-Cinq and Olympe de Clèves before he sat down to write an equally fascinating romance, the story of his own life. The Memoirs therefore show on every page the imagination of the novelist at the height of his power.
