The Early History of Medicine in Philadelphia.

Medical Societies.

A medical society was instituted in Philadelphia on the 4th of February, 1765, and was, as far as I can ascertain, the first professional organization formed in the Colonies.[1] It was called "The Philadelphia Medical Society." This continued in operation till the 11th of November, 1768, when it was united with the "American Society for Promoting Useful Knowledge,"[2] it being judged "that the union might be beneficial to the community, and the ends proposed of both be thereby better answered." Accordingly, at the meeting of the latter society, held on the 11th of that month, a number of the members of the Medical Society attended,[3] and the Medical Fellows were appointed a standing committee

  1. The first Medical Association in New Jersey was held at New Brunswick, in July, 1766, and the Massachusetts Medical Society, which is generally stated to have been the first attempt at professional organization in America, was not originated till 1781.
  2. Now known as the American Philosophical Society.
  3. The members at the time of union consisted of Drs. Græme, Cadwalader, Redman, Morgan, Kearsley, Clarkson, Bayard, Harris, Rush, Souman, Glentworth, and Potts.
