Organization of the Medical Department and of General Hospitals.

The following particulars relating to the organization of our Military Hospital Department, and the early action of Congress in regard to it may prove interesting:—

July 17, 1775. A committee of three was appointed by Congress to report a method of establishing a General Hospital Department. The committee consisted of Messrs. Paine, of Massachusetts, Lewis, of New York, and Middleton, of South Carolina.

July 27. Congress "Resolved, That for the establishment of an Hospital for an army, consisting of 20,000 men, the following officers and other attendants be appointed, with the following allowance and pay.

"A Director-General and Chief Physician, his pay four dollars per day.
