The Russian authority decided that this action was an abuse of the white flag in order to cover a mission of demoralizing propaganda, and the German colonel was sent to Siberia, there to make some complementary reflections at his leisure on the "point of view of the German and Austrian Governments." It is said that the anger of the poor man, who had obviously expected a different reception, was really laughable. He had to admit to himself that the Russians had ceased to be as trustful and credulous as they had seemed in the beginning. It is not remarkable, therefore, to learn that the Austro-German General Staff at the beginning of June issued an order to stop all attempt at intercourse with the Russians.
