Scott, Thomas, burgess for Prince Ed- ward count}- in the assemblies of May. 1769, and ijUj-ijji.

Seawell, Henry, merchant, was burgess for Elizabeth City in 1632. and in 1639 was burgess for Lower Norfolk count}-. He died about iC)44. Seawell's Point on the Elizabeth river is named for him. He left a son Plenry, who died intestate and without issue, and a daughter Anne, who married Colonel Lem- uel MascMi (c|. \.).

Sedgwick, William, came from Burlen Hall. Lancashire, and was clerk of York county, Virginia, from 1690 till his death in 1705. He had two brothers Isaac Sedgwick, bachelor, a lawyer of York county, and deputy clerk in 1688. who died in the par- ish of St. Catherine Creechurch. London. and Thomas Sedgwick, of London.

Selden, James, son of Richard Selden (q. V ). represented Lancaster county in the last house of burgesses 1775 ; was membe>- of the Lancaster county revolutionary com- mittee and member of the state conventions 1775- ^77<^^-

Selden, Richard, son of John Selden, was deputy King's attorney for Elizabeth City county in 1752. and grandson of the immi- grant, Samuel Selden (q. v.), was one of the justices of Lancaster county, and bur- gess for the same in 1 756-1 758. He mar- ried Mary Ball, daughter of Major James Ball, of "Bewdley," and had besides other sons. James Selden (q. v.).

Selden, Rev. William, son of John Selden, and grandson to Samuel Selden, the immi- grant, was born in 1741, was educated at William and Hilary College 1753, afterwards studied law and practiced, but abandoned the prcjfession for the ministry, and was or- dained a minister in London March 10, 1771. He was rector of the church at Hampton from 1771 till his death June 25. 1783. He married May 29. 1767, Mary Ann Hancock, of Princess Anne county, Vir- ginia.

Semple, James, was brother of John Semple (q. v.). was born May 18, 1730, came t(j Virginia in 1755. was minister of St. Peter's parish, New Kent county in 1767. He married in 1763. Rebecca Allen, of New Kent, and died about 1787. He was father of Judge James Semple, professor of law in William and Mary College.

Semple, John, was a son of Rev. James Semple. minister of Long Dreghorn, Ayr- shire, Scotland. He was born October 17, 1727. emigrated to King and Queen county, Virginia, in 1752, was a lawyer. He mar- ried in 1761 Elizabeth Walker, and was father of John Walker Semple, an eminent lawyer of Kentucky, who married (first) Miss Laurie of Caroline county, Virginia ; and (second) Lucy, daughter of Donald Robertson.
