(V) Captain Edward M. Tilley. fourth child of William B. and Lydia (Brown) Til- ley, was born in Bristol, Rhode Island, April 2. 1835. I le attended school in Odgensburgh, New York, for a short time, beginning to earn his own living when but seven years of age. He was very saving and industrious, a keen moneymaker and at the age of six- teen years had saved one thousand dollars. He married, and in 1861 enlisted in the Eigh- teenth Regiment New York Volunteers, served four years and was honorably dis- charged, holding the rank of captain, and assistant quartermaster. After the war he located in Norfolk, Virginia, and with the capital he had accumulated started in the lumber business, buying timber on the stumpage plan, erecting saw mills, and con- verting the logs into manufactured lumber. In 1895 he retired from business and yet resides in Norfolk. He is a member and ftew^ard of the Methodist Episcopal church, a Republican in politics and has served as supervisor of Norfolk county for twenty- four years, and member of the school board.
Captain Tilley married (first) November 6, 1856, Eliza A. Flare, of Ogdensburgh, New York, born October 7, 1834, died in Norfolk. Virginia, in 1898. Captain Tilley married (second) February 15. 1908, Lillian L., daughter of Alfred W. Williams. Five children, all by first wife: i. W^illiam Mat- thews, born in Ogdensburgh, New York, July 3, 1858. married Nettie M. Lindsey and has children : Coke Munroe and Edward Mathew. 2. Mary Eva, born in Ogdens- burgh, New York, October 3, i860, married, January 6, 1881, Alvah H. Martin (q. v'). Children: Fay, married. October 8, 1909, E. L. Slover ; James G. ; Alvah H. (VI) George Thomas Tilley, second son and fourth child of Captain Edward M. Tilley and his first wife, Eliza A. Hare, was l)orn in Princess Anne county, X'irginia, July 23, 1868. He was educated in public and private schools, finishing his studies by a business course of two years at Randolph- Macon (1886 and 1887). He began busi- ness life with his father as ofTfice manager, continuing three years. In 1891 he estab- lished a real estate insurance and invest- ment business in Norfolk, continuing in that line until 1902, when he discontinued all but his insurance operations. Soon afterward he was elected cashier of the Merchants' and Planters' Bank of Norfolk, and in 1908 was elected vice-president and director. He is also secretary of a building and loan asso- ciation and has other interests of impor- tance. Mr. Tilley is a Republican and for eight years was postmaster of Norfolk. He is a member and secretary of Doric Lodge, Free and x\ccepted Masons, belongs to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the Im- proved Order of Red Men, the Protestant Episcopal church, in which he is treasurer and vestryman.
He married, June 11, 1890. Helen Stanley Alichie, born March i, 1871. Children: Thomas Chapman, born October 14. 1893, graduate of William and Mary College; Wil- liam Benjamin, born June 17. 1895, now a student at W'illiam and Alary College ; George Stanley, born May 4, 1899; Helen E., born March 25, 1901.
Taylor-Stansbury. Five generations of the Taylor family were born in the old homestead, yet standing on the corner of Duke and Freemason streets, Norfolk, now occupied by Captain W'hittle, Richard Tay- lor, father of Mrs. Elizabeth Armistead (Taylor) Stansbtiry, being of the fifth gen- eration. The family trace to W^elsh ances- tors and early settlers in Virginia. Through intermarriage they are connected with the first families of the state, not only in point of date of settlement but in influence, as well as importance.
