No. 1.—DATES OF CHOLA KINGS.

By Professor F. Kielhorn, C.I.E.; Gottingin.

(Continued from Vol. VII. page 177.)

OF the numerous dates of Chdla kings sent to me by Prof. Hnltzsch and Mr. Venkayya, I again publish seventeen. Among these, the most interesting — and, I may add, those which have given me most trouble — are perhaps the five dates Nos. 85*89 of R&jaraja [II.] Parake'sarivarman, which prove that this king, of whom no dates have yet been published here, commenced to reign between (approximately) the 27th March and the 23rd November A.D. 1146. Tho date No. 99 reduces the time, previously found for the commencement of the reign of Rajdndra-Chdja HI., to the period from (approximately) the 21st March to the 20th April A.D. 1246. The date No. 94, of Kulottunga-Ohdja HI., is of the 25th January A.D. 1217, while the dates of his successor R&jar&ja IIL show that this king commenced to reign already between (approximately) the 23rd June and the 13th August A.D. 1216 ; and similarly the dates Nos. 96 and 97, of Rajaraja HI., are of the 7th February and the 22nd April A.D. 1248, while the years of his successor R&jendra-Oh6la III., as has just been stated, are counted from some time between (approximately) the 21st March and the 20th April AJD. 1246. The date No. 100 belongs to a king or chief Tribhuvanavlra-Chdla, who apparently commenced to reign in AJD. 1381-32.
