said to have succeeded, and to have held the see until 1411[1]; but this cannot be correct, as the spiritualities were, by the authority of the archbishop of Canterbury, assigned to Thomas abbot of Shrewsbury in the year 1408[2]. The see was not declared vacant however until after 8th Oct. 1410, the day of the death of Trevaur[3], as it is said; and then

Robert of Lancaster[4] was elected, and consecrated at Lincoln 28th June 1411, by Thomas Arundel archbishop of Canterbury. He died in March 1432-3, and 26th April 1433 a license was issued to elect a bishop in his room[5]. The Pope however appointed

John Low, alias Lobbe, a Friar Eremite, S.T.P., by bull dated 17th Aug. 1433. He received the temporalities 17th Oct. following[6], and the spiritualities on the 21st of the same month[7]. By his letter dated 24th Oct. 1433, he requested license to be consecrated out of the Church of Canterbury, and 1st Nov. following was assigned for that purpose[8]. He was translated to Rochester in April 1444[9].

Reginald Peacock, S.T.B., obtained the see by papal provision 22nd April 1444, and the temporalities were restored to him 8th June[10]. He was consecrated on

  1. Wharton, de Epis. Assav. p. 345, who cites a document to prove that David presided over the see of St. Asaph from 1402 to 1411.
  2. Reg. Arundel. 451.
  3. Pat. 12 Hen. IV. The date of the death of bishop Trevaur is not known for certain, unless it be that mentioned in note 79; and bishop Kennet positively states that Trevaur died l0th April 1410.
  4. In an original charter this clause occurs, which shews thathis surname was Lancaster: "In cujus rei testimonium sigillum nostrum praesentibus est appen sum. Dat. in Monasterio de Valle crucis 24 die Decembris A. D. 1429, et nostræ consecrationis anno xix." Around the seal is this legend : S. Roberti de Lancaster, Dei gratia Episc. Assavensis.
