Edmund de Abbendon or Abingdon, treasurer of Salisbury, was elected[5], and the royal assent given to his election l0th Oct.[6]; but he was not consecrated until 2nd April[7] following. He died at Soissy in France 16th Nov. 1240[8], where his heart and viscera were buried, but his body was deposited at Pontigny[9] . The congé d'élire was issued 25th Dec.[10], and

Boniface of Savoy[11], the uncle of Alianor queen consort of king Henry the Third, was chosen, and accepted by the King, in 1240[12]; but the Pope, owing to the opposition of Simon de Langton, archdeacon of Canterbury, did not immediately confirm the election; he was however eventually consecrated at Lyons[13] by the Pope himself in the year 1245[14] but he was not enthroned before 1st Nov. 1249[15].
