Herbert, called Grammaticus, enjoyed this dignity in
1083, 1086, and 108770, Gilbert held it about 110571. There is some doubt
whether he ousrht not to be placed amono^ the arch-
deacons of Salop in Hereford diocese. Roger held it from about Ii2i7'- to 11 80. Richard Peche held it about 1180 and ii9o7'3, Robert de Insula held it from about 1198 to 121 2. Thomas Nevil, 121274 and 1214. Ralph de Maidstone held it in 1 215 75 and 1221. Alexander de Swereford held it in May 1221, and
ist July 1232. Walter de Kirkeham held it after r232. Peter de Radnor held it in 1247 and 125676. Roger held the office in 127577. William de Montfort held it in 1283. In that year
he was made dean of St. PauFs, London ; but held
this with it to the time of his death in 129478.
