Edmund Grindal, archbishop of York, was elected to this see 10th Jan. 1575-6, and had the royal assent 14th Feb.[2]; he was confirmed on the following day, and the temporalities were restored to him 23d April[3]. He died at Croydon 6th July 1583, ætat. 63, and was buried there.

John Whitgift, bishop of Worcester, was nominated by the Queen 14th Aug. 1583, and elected by the chapter on the 23d of the same month, and confirmed 23d Sept. following[4]; he received the temporalities 7th Oct., and was enthroned on the 23d of the same month. He died 29th Feb. 1603-4[5], and was buried 27th March at Croydon[6].

Richard Bancroft, bishop of London, was nominated by the King to this see 9th Oct. 1604; elected by the chapter 17th Nov., and confirmed l0th Dec.[7] He became chancellor of the university of Oxford 22nd April 1608, and died 2nd Nov. 1610, ætat. 67, and was buried[8] in the parish church of Lambeth[9].

George Abbot, bishop of London, was nominated by the King to this see 4th March 1610-11, elected by the chapter on the 18th, and received the royal assent on the 20th of the same month, and confirmed 9th April 1611[10]. The temporalities were restored to him 4th May. He died 4th Aug. 1633, ætat. 71, and was buried at Guildford in Surrey[11].

On 24th July 1621 while hunting in Bramzill park, which belonged to lord Edward Zouch of Haringworth, he accidentally shot Peter Hawkins the keeper, instead of the buck he aimed at, and 22nd Nov. 1621 he obtained the King's free pardon for the man's death.
