With the treasurership fell the subtreasurership ; and from the year 1547 these two dignities have be- come entirely extinct in York cathedral. CHANCELLORS. This dignity w^as founded by archbishop Thomas about the year 1085; but before the erection of the deanery, precentorship, &c., he had established a " Magister Scholai'um" in the church of York'^^. SiRUs is the first name that occurs as chancellor of this church in 1113. He witnessed a deed by the title of Magister Scholarum. Robert was chancellor of York in 1130. Simon de Apulia was from this dignity made dean in 1 1 94. John de Sancto Laurentio held it in 1195, 1199? and 1 20 1 9. Richard de Cornubia held it in 1225. John Blund held it in 1231 and 1244. He died about 1248. John de Excestria held it in 1254 and 1258^°. Robert de Scardeburgh in 1262 ^^ William Wickwane held it in 1263^2. Xn 1279 ^® became archbishop of this see"'-'^.
