EXETER COLLEGE Was founded by Walter Stapeldon, bishop of Exeter ; who had license loth May 13 14^^^ to give two mes- suages in Oxford to twelve scholars studying in that university. It was first founded in Hart hall, and called Stapel- don hall, after the founder, who, within a year after, being displeased with his design, and having bought some other lands and tenements, transplanted liis scholars to St. Stephen's hall, the placo where part of the college now stands. 7'> I*at. 7 Kdw.
