So that though John Higdon, John OHver, and John London are reckoned deans here, yet Richard Cox, S.T.P., made dean of the newly-erected see at Osney 8th Jan. 1543—4, and translated hither in 1545, became the first dean of Christ Church 4th Nov. He was deprived of this deanery in 1553. Richard Marshall or Marti all, S.T.P., was put in by queen Mary in 1553 ; and (upon queen Elizabeth's accession to the crown) he resigned it in May 1559. George Carew, S.T.P., was made dean here 9th May 1559 ; and he resigned it in 1561, on being made dean of Windsor. Thomas Sampson, S.T.P., was installed in Michaelmas term 1561. He was deprived in 1564, for puritanism, by archbishop Parker. Died 9th April 1589, setat. 72. Thomas Godwin, S.T.P., succeeded in June 1565 ; he was removed to the deanery of Canterbury loth March 1 566— 7, and afterwards was promoted to the see of Bath and Wells. Thomas Cooper, S.T.P., was presented by the Queen 28th April 1567, and instituted by the archbishop on the 3otli of the same month. In 1569 he became dean of Gloucester, and in 137 1 he was made bishop of Lincoln. John Piers, S.T.P., master of Balllol college, was ad- mitted 28th Feb. 1570-71 ; he obtained the deanery of Salisbury 15th March 1571-2, and in 1576 he was made bishop of Rochester. Tobias Matthew, ^.H .V ., president of St. John's colleqc, succeeded in 1577, and resigned it in 1584, having been made dean of Durham 31st Aug. 1583; he be- came bishop of that see in 1595, and archbishop of York in 1606. William James, S.T.P., master of Universitif college^ succeeded in 1584 ; he was removed in 1596 to the deanery of Durham, and to the bishopric of Durham in 1606.
