Bright, windy morning, 40¡ at 7 a. m. Went to University for receipt book, etc. Then took 11:30 train for Ft. Collins , reaching there at 1:15. Went to Northern Hotel , got lunch ordered team for tomorrow at Tate's and spent balance of day reading and writing. Retired at 8:45.

Arose at 5:45. Left hotel at 7 a.m. with team and driver from Tate's. Cloudy and cold, east wind, clearing and warming toward noon. Took Rocky Ridge road. Saw big flock blackbirds, numerous horned larks , several hawks and magpies and one meadowlark . Reached mouth of Box Elder at 10 a.m. N of creek, Niobrara and Dakota dip 66deg, strike N 55deg E. Benton measures 143 yds horizontally across
