Bright, windy morning, 40¡ at 7 a. m. Went to University University of Colorado for receipt book, etc. Then took 11:30 train for Ft. Collins Ft. Collins, Colorado, reaching there at 1:15. Went to Northern Hotel Northern Hotel, got lunch ordered team for tomorrow at Tate's and spent balance of day reading and writing. Retired at 8:45.

Arose at 5:45. Left hotel Northern Hotel at 7 a.m. with team and driver from Tate's. Cloudy and cold, east wind, clearing and warming toward noon. Took Rocky Ridge road. Saw big flock blackbirds, numerous horned larks Eremophila alpestris, several hawks and magpies magpie and one meadowlark Sturnella. Reached mouth of Box Elder Box Elder Creek, Colorado at 10 a.m. N of creek, Niobrara Niobrara and Dakota dip 66deg, strike N 55deg E. Benton measures 143 yds horizontally across
