CHINESE LETTERS.

As the spoken and written languages are unlike, a colloquial sentence written in the characters which would represent its sounds, would not to a Chinese scholar correctly express its meaning. Many colloquial words have no written character. In such case a character of similar signification, with a star following it, has been used in this book.
