" Androcles and the Lion " ; " The Wishing-Cup " resembles Uhland's ballad of "The Luck of Edenhall"; "The Wicked Stepmother " is the theme of Phaedra and Hippolytus.
A commendable feature of the work is the new series of photo- graphs of incidents in the Jataka in the carvings of the Stupa of Bharhut. The notes, so far as they go, are valuable, and contain many parallels from Indian and Western folklore. It is to be regretted, however, that little use has been made of the modern collections of Indian tales, which would have supplied numerous parallels.
