SUOMALAISIA Kansansatuja. Finnish Folk-tales, pt. 2. Ki7igly Talcs, vol. i. Helsingfors : 1893, pp. 272.

I OWE an apology to Mr. Karl Krohn for not noticing this v^olume long ago. It arrived when I had a great press of work, and then through inadvertence I neglected to read it. The first part of this series contained the " Animal Stories", which were duly noticed in FoLK-LORE.

This second part contains thirteen tales, with from two to four sub-types for some of them. These are given in full. Then follow 302 variants, either in a curtailed form, or the fact is merely recorded, together with the place where it was collected. The group is termed " kingly", because one of the personages is always of a higher social rank than the narrator ; and in vol. i the motive is the relation betzveen husband and unfe. The titles of the stories in full do not correspond with the headings under which the variants of each are collected. I therefore omit the former and only give the latter, together with Mr. Krohn's abstract of each story-type.
