This will be more clearly seen from the annexed tabular statement, showing at one view the area, population, and number of villages for the old and the new parganas. Suffice it to state here that the alterations were all of them made with a view to rendering the parganas more compact, and that no doubt this end has been attained. This table does not show the numbers of the agricultural and non-agrithey are as follows:

The agricultural population is therefore 67 per cent., but this does not include the large class of day-labourers,.wh.ose almost entire dependence is on the soil.
