There are 4,762 children attending the schools, there are 13 female schools, and the central school at Hardoi has turned out some very creditable pupils. Education seems appreciated by the yeomen, who are aware of their own deficiencies; still the subscriptions in aid of education in 1871 were only Rs. 1,746. In the zila school at the central station the fees were Rs. 426, and the Government expenditure was Rs. 4,331. There are no news- papers, literary or educational societies in the district, nor are there any poor-houses, such as exist in Sitapur and Lucknow, nor charitable endow- ments,
