COUCY-LE-CHATEAU This castle of Coucy-le-Chateau was built by a vassal of the king of France in the thirteenth century. It was at the end of a hill and protected on all sides but one by steep cliffs. One can see the moat (A) and the double draw- bridge and towers which protected the portal. The round donjon (B) was probably the largest in the world, one hundred feet in diameter and two hundred and ten feet high. At the base its walls were thirty-four feet thick. At the end of the inner court (C) was the residence of the lord (D). To the left of the court was a great hall and to the right were the quarters of the garrison. This ancient building was destroyed by the Germans during the recent World War
