PORTRAIT OF ERASMUS. (Bv HOLBEIN) This wonderful picture by Hans Holbein the Younger (1497-1543) hangs in the Louvre gallery at Paris. We have every reason to suppose that it is an excellent portrait, for Holbein lived in Basel a considerable part of his life and knew Erasmus well. The artist was, moreover, celebrated for his skill in catching the likeness when depicting the human face.
