May 29th, 1782.

My Dear Mother,

probably before this reaches you, you will have heard of the strangest Transaction that ever happened between two Civilized Nations. As a party concerned I will however state the true Acct to you, a Captn Huddy was hung sometime since by our Refugees and a label was fixed to his breast signifiying they retaliated upon him for the Death of a Captain White a Loyalist who they pretend had been unjustly put to death by the Enemy, not contented with hanging this unfortunate Man within their own lines. nothing would satisfy them but they must carry him over at night to the Jersey shore and leave his Body there; this exasperated the Inhabitants very much, and Complaints were made to Genl Washington who immediately demanded of Sir H. Clinton the perpetrators of the above inhuman act. I saw Genl Washington's letter, it is very strongly worded and in it he says to save the Innocent I demand the guilty. Sir H. Clinton in answer finds fault with Genl Washington's improper expressions, as he terms them, and tho' he assures him he had ordered a Court of inquiry to sit upon the people
