CHAPTER I.
BOAT LIFE.
LET US look into the homes of China, and thus shall we learn of the hearts of its people, for the home is the mirror of the heart. The passions, tastes and imaginations of the soul are all portrayed in the abiding-place of the body. Chinese character, politics, religions and social customs, are all shown in its domes- tic relations.
And, indeed, is not the home, anywhere, an epitome of national life, its institutions and sentiments ? Inasmuch as we understand the determinate quantity of family life, insomuch do we know the trend of national existence.
