wisdom; experience, the basis of a purified and settled character,—the rock, on which, with Divine support, he stands strong in truth and goodness forevermore. Thus would humanity, as a collective man, having passed through the fiery furnace of affliction—into which it was brought by its own errors and evils,—come forth, at length, purified and humbled, acknowledging and worshiping its God, and receiving with childlike thankfulness His gracious gifts and blessings. And thus will it yet be, on this earth. And then will "peace flow as a river, and righteousness as the waves of the sea." "Violence shall be no more heard in thy land, wasting nor destruction within thy borders; but thou shalt call thy walls Salvation, and thy gates Praise.—Thy sun shall no more go down, neither shall thy moon withdraw itself; for the Lord shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended."[1]
