I rejoiced to find myself once more upon the solid earth, with the forest boughs above me, and my face towards Naples, and that at this side it was thawing fast.
A rough observation at the Taberna showed that it was about 3000 feet above the sea. Upon the highest point I found the barometer read 26·13 inches, thermo. 36° Fahr. at 4·40 Naples mean time, and the reduced height above the sea was 3654·5 feet.
The summits of Monte Croce were quite invisible, but the men I had brought down with me, said they rose more than a thousand palms, above the highest point that we had passed.
