the columns of the Forum; the forms of which latter prove, that they were overthrown, not by Grothic hands, but by earthquake impulse.

In connection with Padre Secchi's observation, it may be well to notice here, the several minor shocks, which have been noticed and recorded as occurring, very nearly previous or subsequent to, the great shock of 16th December. Many others must, no doubt, have taken place, and had there been means to observe them would have been recorded.

1857. December 7 7.30 A.M. At Potenza, a report from beneath like the explosion of a mine, and a slight shock.
" 16 .. The great shock
" 19 6 and 10 A.M. At Salerno, a harmless shock,
" 21 .. Up to this date occasionally felt, with injury at Lago Negro.
" 23 ... At Balvano, a slight shock.
" 23 6 P.M. At Saponara, two heavy reports, with interval of 30 seconds.
" 26 3 and 6 A.M. At Montemurro, strong shocks, which levelled remains of buildings.
" 26 3 A.M. At Viggiano, a powerful shock.
" 28 9 P.M. At La Sala, several shocks, each 10 to 12 seconds, followed by tremors less intense.
" 29 6 and 7.30 P.M. At La Sala, same as day previous.
" 29 6.45 P.M. At Potenza, a strong shock, and several minor ones afterwards.
1858. Jan. and Feb. .. The occurrence of many minor shocks was reported, from Salerno, Potenza, the central region generally, and Naples, but none precise, or absolutely reliable.
March 6 During night At Lago Negro, three prolonged but harmless shocks.
" 7 3 P.M. and at 8 P.M. At Lago Negro, two shocks, much more severe than on the preceding day, lasting 9 or 10 seconds each.
" 7 2.50 P.M. At Salerno.
" 8 5 P.M. At Lago Negro, and at Montemurro.
