SMALL AMPLITUDE AT NAPLES.
Station. Potenza. Monticchio. Barielle.
Distance from the seismic vertical, geographical miles 15.00 23.50 24.50
Wave velocity 12.255 11.757 11.564

At Naples, in the separate system of reflected and refracted waves, at 68 geographical miles from the seismic vertical, the amplitude was reduced, partly by distance, but also by loss at the reflecting and refracting medium, to not more than 0·5 inch, as derived from the sensations of the best observers questioned by me, while the immunity of the buildings generally from injury proves that the horizontal velocity of the wave there, certainly did not reach 3 feet per second, nor probably greatly exceed the highest difference value of assignable by the swing of the chandeliers.
