have been observable with better instruments and nearer to the seismic verticals. Battista, in his 'Relazione di Terremoto,' &c. (of 1857) mentions, amongst other loosely-observed circumstances, that wells, and also particular places (as about Bella and Moliterno) exhaled unusual smells, such as of sulphur and bitumen, before the earthquake: for these his narrative, which is full of like wonders, must be consulted.
