THE EXACT MOMENT AT VIETRI.

But five hours and a quarter, Italian time, is 5h 30m after sunset; hence

h. m. s.
4 34 27
5 30 0
10 4 27

mean time (Frankish or English reckoned) at Vietri.

A degree of longitude, at the latitude of Vietri, is = 45·56 geographical miles; and Vietri is 9 miles east of Naples.

Therefore the difference in time between them is 5m 10·8s, deducting which we have

h. m. s.
10 4 27·0
5 10·8
9 59 16·2

as the moment of the occurrence of the great shock at Vietri di Potenza, by Neapolitan time.

I recurred to inquiries here, as to the light before alluded to, as reported to have been observed on the night of the shock, but the Vietrians had no information, beyond what they had heard affirmed by others.
