Heidelberg Catechism.

So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He Him; male and female creat­ed He them. Gen. 1, 27.

And God saw everything that he had made: and behold, it was very good. Gen. 1, 31.

And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Eph. 4, 24.

QUESTION 7.

Whence then comes this depraved nature of man?

ANSWER.

From the fall and disobedience of our first parents, Adam and Eve, in Paradise, whereby our nature became so corrupt, that we are all conceived and born in sin.

Wherefore as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned. Rom. 5, 12.

Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. Ps. 51, 5.

QUESTION 8.

But are we so far depraved, that we are wholly unapt to any good and prone to all evil?

ANSWER.

Yes; unless we are born again by the Spirit of God.
