For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall man give in exchange for his soul? Matth. 16, 26.
QUESTION 14.
Can any mere creature make satisfaction for us?
ANSWER.
None: for first, God will not punish, in any other creature, that of which man has made himself guilty; and further, no mere creature can sustain the burden of God's eternal wrath against sin, and redeem others therefrom.
For verily He took not on Him the nature of angels; but He took on Him the seed of Abraham. Hebr. 2, 16.
Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by His own blood, He entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. Hebr. 9, 12.
None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him: For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth forever. Ps. 49, 7. 8.

What manner of mediator and redeemer then must we seek?
