Armstrong, George Dodd, educator, clergyman, author, was born Sept. 15, 1813, in
Mendham,
N.J. In 1838-51 he was professor of chemistry and mechanics in Washington college of Virginia. In 1851-91 was pastor of a, presbyterian church in Norfolk, Va.; and pastor emeritus in 1891-99. He was the author of The Summer of the Pestilence; The Doctrine of Baptisms; The Christian Doctrine of Slavery; Theology of Christian Experience; The Sacraments of the New Testament and The Books of Nature and Revelation, a criticism of the theory of evolution. He died May 12, 1899, in Norfolk, Va. Armstrong, George Washington, business man, was bom Aug. 11. 1836, in Boston,
Mass. In 1865 he purchased a local baggage express, and at once organized Armstrong's transfer, which he soon raised to be a business of importance and magnitude. He owned the news business on the entire Hoosac tunnel line. In 1899. he presented the town of Windham a memorial building for the use of the public library. He died June 30, 1901, at Lake Winnepissogu, N.H.

ginning of the second war with Great Britain in 1813, he entered the army as captain in the thirteenth infantry. On the return of peace in 1815 he retired from the army with the rank of lieutenant-colonel of the first regiment of rifles. He died Nov. 10, 1884, in Red Hook, N.Y. Armstrong, Henry Clay, diplomat, statesman, was born June 1, 1840, in Lafayette, Ga. In 1876-80 he served as a member of the Alabama state senate; in 1880-84 was state superintendent of education of Alabama; in 1884-85 was a member of the Alabama house of representatives; and in 1885-89 served as consul-general of the United States to Brazil. He died Dec. 17, 1900, in Auburn, Ala. Armstrong, James, soldier, congressman, was born about 1750 in Carlisle, Pa. In 1776 he served as a colonel in the successful defense of Fort Moultrie, Charleston harbor; and commanded the Pennsylvania militia in the defense of Germantown in 1777. In 1793-95 he was a representative from Pennsylvania to the third congress. He died March 3, 1795, in Carlisle, Pa. Armstrong, James, naval officer, was born Jan. 17, 1794, in Shelbyville, Ky. He commanded the East India squadron in 1855; and in 1857 assisted at the capture of the barrier forts near Canton, China. He was in command of the navy yard at Pensacola when Florida seceded in 1861; and surrendered without resistance when a greatly superior military force demanded possession. In 1866 he was promoted to commodore. He died Aug. 27, 1868.

Armstrong, James F., naval officer, was born Nov. 20, 1817, in New Jersey. He was promoted lieutenant in 1842; and was commissioned captain in 1862. He died April 19, 1873, in New Haven, Conn. Armstrong, John, soldier, congressman, was born in 1725 in Ireland. He distinguished himself in the Indian wars ; and was consulted by the proprietors of Pennsylvania on all matters connected with Indian affairs. In 1776 congress promoted him from the rank of colonel to that of brigadier-general. He assisted in the defense of Fort Moultrie; and in the battle of Germantown. Armstrong, John, soldier, congressman, United States senator, author, was born on Nov. 25, 1758, in Carlisle, Pa. He served as an officer in the revolutionary war. At the close of the war, in order to obtain redress for the grievances of the officers of the army, he prepared the celebrated Newburgh Letters. In 1778-88 he was a delegate from Pennsylvania to the continental congress;
was made secretary of state and adjutantgeneral of the state; and to him was intrusted the direction of the last Pennsylvania war against the Connecticut settlers of Wyoming. Returning to New York he was United States senator in 1799-1805, when he resigned. He was commissioned minister to France in 1804; and was also appointed a, commissioner plenipotentiary to Spain. Returning to his own country, he was appointed a brigadier-general in 1812. In 1813-14 he was secretary of war. He was the author of Notes on the War of 1812; Treatise on Gardening; Treatise on Agriculture; and other works. He died April 1, 1843, in Red Hook, N.Y. Armstrong, John H., real estate broker, financier, was born Sept. 30, 1861, in Ireland. He received the rudiments of his education in the national schools; and at Duil's college of Pittsburg, Pa. He is a successful real estate broker of Pittsburg, Pa.; president of the North avenue stair company; president of Boon and Hill wall paper company; vice-president of the Wizard oil company; and vice-president of The M. and
company; and vice-president of The M. and 0. transportation company. He served two terms in the Pittsburg city council; and is now past commander of Ascalon commandery,

Armstrong, Leroy, journalist, author, was born May 13, 1854, in Plymouth, Ind. He studied law at the Indiana state university; and began a newspaper career in 1872. For many years he was connected with the daily newspapers of Chicago, 111.; and is now one of the proprietors of the Democrat of Lafayette, Ind. He is the author of An Indiana Man; Washington Brown Farmer; and The Outlaws.
