In 1867 he graduated from the naval academy; and in 1871 was commissioned lieutenant. In 1892 he was promoted to lieutenant-commander; and in 1894-96 had charge of the branch hydrographic office in New York City. In 1898 he was lighthouse inspector; and in 1898 was

promoted to commander. Arnold, Dutee, lawyer, jurist. In 1819-33 he was associate justice of the state supreme court of Rhode Island. Arnold, Mrs. Eliza Almy Feckham, artist, author, was born May 10, 1823, in Middletown, II.I. She wrote many short stories and for Boston and New York periodicals. She married George B. Arnold, inventor and astronomer of Strawberry Hill, N.J. She was the author of Life, Labor, Love. She died about 1903 in Strawberry Hill, N.J. Arnold, Ernest Hermann, physician, author, was born Feb. 11, 1865, in Germany. He is instructor of orthopaedic surgery at Yale

was born June 34, 1834, in New York City. He was the author of Drift and Other Poems and Poems Grave and Gray. He died Nov. 3, 1865, in Strawberry Farm, N.J. Arnold, Herbert A., physician, surgeon, auwas born Aug. 4, 1857, in Norristown, Pa. In 1873 he graduated from Norristown high school; and in 1878 graduated from the Jefferson medical college of Philadelphia, Pa. Since 1878 he has been actively engaged in the practice of his profession; and in 1887 was president of the thor,

Montgomery county medical society. During the Spanish- American war he was surgeon in the Pennsylvania volunteer cavalry; since 1899 has been treasurer of the association of military surgeon of the United States; and is major and surgeon of the sixth regiment Pennsylvania national guard. He is vice-president of the

Arnold, Horace F., farmer, journalist, statesman, was born June 19, 1857. He has served as state senator four terms of North Dakota.

He

entered journalistic work in 1890;

and since 1894 has been president of the Dakota Chautauqua association. Arnold, Howard Payson, lawyer, lecturer, author, was born Oct. 13, 1831, in Boston,

Mass. In 1852 he graduated from Harvard university; and in 1856 was admitted to the bar. For several years he traveled in foreign countries as a correspondent and lecturer; and in 1868 delivered twelve lectures on the exhibition of 1867 at the Lowell institute of Boston, Mass. In 1900 he took up his residence at Pasadena, Cal. He is the author of European Mosaic; The Great Exhibition of 1867; Gleanings from Pontresina; Historic

Memoir of Dr. John C. Warner; of Dr. Jonathan Mason Warren. Arnold, Isaac, soldier; In 1862-1901 he served in the United States army; and attained the rank of lieutenant-colonel. He died Side-Lights;

about 1905. Arnold, Isaac Newton, lawyer, congressman, author, was born Nov. 30, 1815, in

Hartwick, N.J. He was a, Chicago lawyer. In 1861-65 he was a representative from Illinois to the thirty-seventh and thirty-eighth congresses. He was the author of Life of Abraham Lincoln; Life of Benedict Arnold; and Recollections of the Early Chicago and Illinois Bar. He died April 34, 1884, in Chicago, 111.

Arnold, James Middleton, soldier, merchwas born April 36, 1841, in Libertyville, 111. In 1863 he enlisted as a private in the twenty-fourth regiment Wisconsin volunteersj participated in numerous battles; for four months was in Libby prison; and attained the rank of major. Since 1876 he has been a machinery merchant; has been receiver for several large business houses; and in 1884 erected his present building on West Monroe street, Chicago, 111. Arnold, Jasper Henry, lawyer, jurist, was born May 9, 1869, in Brazos county, Texas; and graduated from the university of Texas. He has been mayor, of Gatesville, Texas; county attorney for Coryell county, Texas; and served as district atant,
