Benjamin, Reuben Moore, lawyer, jurist, author, was born June 29, 1833, in Chatham Center, N.Y. In 1853 he graduated from Amherst

college;

and in

1854-55 attended Harvard law school. In 1856 he entered into the practice of law in Bloomington, II!.; and in 1869-70 was a member of the Illinois state constitutional convention; and during 187386 he was county judge of McLean county, HI. Since 1874 he has been professor of real property and constitutional law in the law department of the Illinois western university. From its organization until 1893 he was the dean. He is the author of Principles of Contract; Principles of Sales; and other works. Benjamin, Samuel Greene Wheeler, diplomat, artist, author, was born Feb 13, 1837, in Argoa, Greece; and is a son of Nathan Benjamin, missionary to Greece and Turkey; and a great grandson Charles of Captain Seymour of the revolution. In 1859 he graduated from Williams college; in 186163 was assistant librarian of the New York state library;

and in 1883-85 was United States minister and consul-general to Persia. He is the author of Art in America; Contemporary Art In Europe; The Atlantic Islands; Troy; A Group of Etchers;

Persia and the Persians; The Story of Persia; The Cruise of the Alice May in the Gulf of St. Lawrence; The Multitudinous Seas; and many other works. Benjamin, Samuel NicoU, soldier, educator, was born Jan. 13, 1839, in New York City. He became assistant professor of mathematics. He was one of the very few officers that held the congressional medal for conspicuous bravery in the field. He died May 15, 1886, on Governor's Island, N.Y. Benjamin, Walter Romeyn, journalist, antiquarian, was born Sept. 24, 1854, in Guilford, Conn. For eleven years was connected with the New York Sun. He originated the special business of dealing in autograph letters and historical documents; and rescued from oblivion many valuable historical papers. In 1887 he established the Collector,

which he stiU edits; and in 1897 was historian of the Sons of the American revolution. Benjamin, William Henry, soldier, was born in Connecticut, in 1861 he became major in the eighth regiment New York cavalry; and in 1865 was brevetted brigadiergeneral of volunteers. Benner, George Jacob, educator, lawyer, congressman, was born April 13, 1859, in Gettysburg, Pa. After several years devoted to teaching he was admitted a member of the Adams county bar in 1881; since which date he has followed the practice of the law. In 1897-99 he was a representative from Pennsylvania to the fifty-fifth congress as a democrat. Benner, Philip, soldier, manufacturer journalist, was born May 19, 1762, in Chester county Pa. He served in the revolutionary war. In 1749 he erected a forge, the first in that vicinity, and manufactured iron during the year. The development of the iron industry in the western part of Pennsylvania is largely due to his enterprise. He was twice a presidential elector, notably on the Jackson-Calhoun ticket of 1824. In 1837 he established the Centre Democrat at Bellefonte, in the interest of General Jackson. He was major-general of the Pennsylvania militia; and left a valuable estate. He died July 27, 1833, in Centre county. Pa. Benneson, Cora Agnes, lawyer, author, was born in Quincy, 111. She graduated with the degrees of A.B., LL.B. and A.M. from the university of Michigan. For two years she traveled around the world; and subsequently lectured on her travels. In 1884 she was admitted to the bar; and is now practicing law in

Massachusetts. She is a member of the American association for the advancement of science ; and a member of the American historical association and a
