Beverley, Robert, historian, author, was born about 1675 in Virginia. He was a writer whose one work, a History of the Present State of Virginia, 1705, is full of life and vigor. In it occurs the phrase the almighty power of gold, which anticipates Irving's almighty dollar. He died in 1716 in Virginia. In 1817 he was appointed governor of the territory of Alabama ; and was the. first governor under the constitution of that state in 181920. He died July 9, 1820, in Fort Jackson,

Bewley, Anthony, clergyman, abolitionist, was bom May 23, 1804, in Tennessee. He began preaching in the Tennessee conference of the methodist episcopal church in 1839; and was transferred to the Missouri conference in 1843. He was hanged in 1860 by a, mob solely because he had proclaimed the injustice of human slavery. He died Sept. 13, 1860, in Fort Worth, Texas. Since 1893 he has been curator and head of the department of geology and mineralogy in the Woman's college of Baltimore, Md. He is a fellow of the geological society of America. Bibbins, Mrs. Ruthella Mary, educator, historian, author, was born about 1860 in Frederick, Md. She was educated at the Woman's college of Baltimore, Md.; and has received the degrees of A.B. and Ph.D. For several years she was a fellow in history at Bryn Mawr college. She is the author of 'Mongst the Wild Nations of Europe; and Historic Chesapeake. Bibighaus, Thomas M., congressman, was born in 1816 in Pennsylvania. In 1851-53 he was a representative from Pennsylvania to the thirty-second congress. He died June 18, 1853, in Lebanon, Pa. Bible, George Potter, educator, lecturer, was bom Feb. 26, 1858, in Bellefonte, Pa. He attended the state college and Clark university; and in 1880 graduated from the national school of elocution and oratory at Philadelphia, Pa.
