Adams, Clarendon E., soldier, farmer, statesman, was born Dec. 31, 1846, in Monroe, Wis. During the civil war he served in the fifth Wisconsin independent battery of artillery; and has been department commander of the grand army of the republic. He has been president of the Nebraska bankers' association; and in 1898 ^as a candidate for congress.

Adams, Comfort Avery, educator, electrical engineer, scientist, author, was born Nov. 1, 1868, in Cleveland, Ohio. He was educated in Cleveland

1891-94 studied in the graduate school of arts and sciences of HarIn vard university. 1891-96 he was an instructor in Harvard university; in 18961906 was assistant professor and since 1906 has been professor of eleotrical engineering in that institution. In 1903-06 he was consulting engineer for Stone and Webster of Boston, JIass.; and since 1905 has been consulting engineer of the American tool and

machine company. He has made original researches on induction motors and alternator regulation. He is the author of Dynamo Design Schedules; numerous papers delivered before scientific societies; and articles in technical journals.

Adams, Cyrus Cornelius, journalist, lecturauthor, was born Jan. 7, 1849, in Naperville, 111. He was the first president of the er,

department of geography in the Brooklyn institute of arts and sciences; and in 1889-90

made

its geographical collection. Since 1884 he has been on the editorial staff of the New York Sun. He is the author of Elementary Commercial Geography.

Adams, Cyrus Hall, merchant, financier, was born Feb. 21, 1849, in Rockbridge county, Va. He was educated in the Chicago pubschools and at the old university of Chicago. In 1871 he became a member of the firm of McCormick, Adams and company; in lic

1883 was head of the firm of Cyrus H. Adams and company; and in 1889 retired from business. In 1871-89 he was a member and a director of the board of trade and was a director of the national bank of America. He is a governing member of the Chicago art institute; and a member of the union league and other clubs and societies.

Adams, Daniel, educator, physician, state senator, author, was born Sept. 39, 1773, in Townsend, Mass. He taught a select school Boston in 1806-13; practiced medicine in Lancaster, Boston and Keene, N.H.; was state senator in New Hampshire in 1838-40; in

and was president of the New Ha,mpshire medical and bible societies. He published an arithmetic and other school books. He died June 8, 1864, in Keene, N.H. Adams, David, soldier, statesman, was born Jan. 38, 1766, in Waxaw, S.C. He served in the revolutionary army during the latter part of the war; subsequently removed to Georgia and settled in Jasper county, where he engaged in Indian warfare as a scout; and was major of militia for ten years. .He afterward became brigadier-general of militiaHe served twenty-five years in the legislature; and was frequently speaker of the house. He died May 17, 1847, in Jasper county, Ga. Adams, David T., millionaire. He is the owner of extensive pine and mineral lands, with offices in Duluth, Minn. Adams, Ebenezer, educator, college president, was born Oct. 3, 1765, in New Ipswich, N.H. In 1806 he became a teacher in the academy at Portland, Maine. In 1810-33 he was professor of mathematics and natural philosophy at Dartmouth college; and for two years was acting-president of that institution. He died Aug. 15, 1841, in Hanover,

Adams, Edgar J., lawyer, legislator, statesman, was born Aug. 6, 1866, in Branch county, Mich. He was educated in the public schools of Michigan; and subsequently studied law. He has attained success in the practice of law in Grand Rapids, Mich.; and in 1887 became a justice of the peace. In 189799 he was a representative to the Michigan state legislature; and in 1899 was speaker of the house. In 1907-08 he was a delegate to the Michigan state constitutional convention.

In 1853 it was incorporated as the town of Oakland, Cal., so named because of the many oak trees that grew there. He was identified with the history and growth of that city. He died about 1900 in Oakland, Cal. Adams, Edward Dean, banker, scientist, was born April 9, 1846, in Boston, Mass. He received his education at the Chauncey hall school of his native city; at the Norwich university of Vermont and traveled two years in Europe.
