author, was born Jan. 10, 1861, in Dundee, 111. In 1883 he graduated from Yale college; and in 1886 graduated from Oberlin theological seminary. In 1886-87 he was pastor of the congregational church at Mount Vernon, Ohio. In 1887-90 he was professor of the English bible in the Oberlin theological seminary; since 1892 has been professor of new

testament language and literature and since 1903 dean of that institution of learning. He is the author of Studies in the Acts and Epistles; Studies in the Teaching of Jesus and His Apostles; Studies in the Life of Jesus Christ; and New Studies in Acts. Bosworth, Francke Huntington, physician,

author, was bom Jan. 25, 1843, in Marietta, Ohio. He is professor of diseases of the throat at Bellevue hospital medical college of New York City. He is the author of Handbook of Diseases of the Throat and Nose; Treatise on Diseases of the Nose and Throat, in two volumes; and Textbook of Diseases of the No?e and Throat. Botetourt, Norhome Berkeley, colonial governor, was born about 1717 in England. He interested himself in William and Mary college of Virginia; and presented gold and silver medals to the students. In 1770 the assembly voted to erect a statue of the deceased governor, which was executed in 1774 and placed in front of the capitol, whence it was removed in 1797 to the front of Wil-

liam and Mary college. He died Oct. 15, 1770, in Williamsburg, Va. Boteler, Alexander R., congressman, was born May 16, 1815, in Shepherdstown, Va.

In 1859-61 he was a representative from Virginia to the thirty-sixth congress. During a part of the civil war he served as a representative in the confederate congress. In 1875 he was appointed a commissioner to the centennial exhibition. He died May 8, 1892, in Virginia. Botkin, Alexander Campbell, lawyer, lieutenant-governor, was born Oct. 13, 1842, in Madison, Wis. In 1878-85 he was United States marshal of Montana; in 1893-97 he was lieutenant-governor of Montana; and in 1896 was republican candidate for governor of that state. He died in 1905 in Helena,

with abolition sentiments; and made three attempts to enter the army during the last year of the civil war, but being under age and size was rejected. He was prohibition candidate for governor of Kansas in 1888; and having early espoused the populist cause, that party nominated him for congress in the third district in 1894, but he was defeated. In 1897-99 he was a representative from Kansas to the fifty-fifth congress as a populist. Botsford, Elmer Francis, financier, lawyer, was born Nov. 24, 1861, in Burke, N.Y. Since 1889 he has practiced law in Plattsburg, N. Y. For several years he was corporation counsel for the city; and is now a director of the first national bank. Botsford, George Willis, educator, author, was born in 1862 in West Union, Iowa. Since 1895 he has been instructor of history of Oreece and Rome at Harvard university. He is the author of The Development of the Athenian Constitution; and History of Greece for High Schools and Academies. Botsford, William, lawyer, jurist, was born in April, 1763, in New Haven, Conn. He was a judge of the admiralty in New Brunswick in 1803-07; he was elected to the assembly in 1812 and for every succeeding term until 1823, holding the office of speaker in 181723. In 1823-46 he was judge of the supreme court. He died May 8, 1864, in Sackville, Botta, Mrs. Anne Charlotte, author, poet, was bom in 1820 in Bennington, Vt. Her weekly receptions were for many years the nearest approach in New York City to a salon. She was the author of Handbook of Universal Literature ; Leaves from the Diary of a Recluse; and Poems. She died March 23. 1891, in New York City. Botta, Vincenzo, educator, author, was born Nov. 11, 1818, in Italy. He was for a long period a professor of Italian literature in the university of New York.
