and of the council of safety. He died in August, 1800, in Providence, E.I. Bowen, Rees T., farmer, jurist, congressman, was born Jan. 10, 1809, in Tazewell county, Va. He was a farmer and grazier. a representative in the state legislature of Virginia in 1863-64; a magistrate for several years prior to the civil war; and presiding justice of the county court a portion of the time. In 1873-75 he was a representative from Virginia to the forty-third congress. He died in Virginia. Bowen, Mrs. Sue, litterateur, author, was born in 1834 in South Carolina. She was the author of Sylvia's World; Gerald Gray's Wife; Lily; and Busy Moments of an Idle Woman, a collection of stories. She died in 1875, in Charleston, S.O.

tative in the state legislature in 1856. In 1861 he entered the union army as captain; in 1862 was promoted to a colonelcy; served civil war; and attained the brevet brigadier-general. At the close of the civil war he settled in Arkansas. He was president of the constitutional convention of 1866 and 1868; served four years as a justice of the state supreme court; resigned to accept the appointment of governor of Idaho territory in 1871; and resigned the governorship and returned to Arkansas, where he was defeated for United States senator. He removed to Colorado, where he served for four years as judge of the Leadville district; was elected to the state senate in 1882; and in 1883-89 he was a United States senator from Colorado. He died Dec. 30, 1906, in Pueblo, Col. Bowen, WiUiam Manuel Perez, lawyer, statesman, was born Sept. 8, 1864, in Attleboro, Mass. He received his education in the city school of Rhode

reference librarian of the Reynolds library at Rochester; in 1897-1900 he was on the editorial staff of the New York Tribune; and in 1900-01 was on the staff of the New International Encyclopsedia. In 1901-04 he was librarian of the Wilmington institute free library; and while living in Delaware was a member of the state library commission. He is a member of the American library association; and was its treasurer in 1906-07. In 1905 he was president of the library department of the religious education association; and in 1906-07 was president of the District of Columbia library association. He is the compiler of Selected Bibliography of the religious denominations of the United States. Since 1904 he has been librarian of the public library of the District of Columbia. Bowerman, Richard Neville, soldier, was born in Maryland. In 1861 he became corporal in the seventh regiment New York militia; and in 1865 was brevetted brigadiergeneral of volunteers.
Bowers, Alphonzo Benjamin, lawyer, inwas born on Sept. 25, 1830, in West Baldwin, Maine. He invented the hydraulic ventor,
dredging, transportation and filling. He studied law and became his own patent attorney. Bowers, Eaton Jackson, lawyer, state senator, congressman, was born June 17, 1865, in Canton, Miss. In 1896 he was elected to the Mississippi state senate; and in 1900 to the house of representatives. In 1903-11 he was a representative from Mississippi to the fifty-eighth, fifty-ninth, the sixtieth and sixty-first congresses as a democrat. Bowers, George, soldier, was born in New Hampshire. He served in the Mexican war as a captain; and in the civil war as a major. He died Feb. 14, 1883.
