Boyd, James, lawyer, railroad president, philanthropist, was born March 39, 1851, in J^'ayette county, Pa. In 1842 he began the practice of law; and since 1856 has been counsel for the Reading railroad company. In 1871 he was a member of the convention to revise the constitution of Pennsylvania. He is president of the Stony Creek and Pennsylvania railroad; president of the Perkioman railroad; and president of various other corporations ; and resides in Norristown, Pa. Boyd, James, educator, lawyer, jurist, was born in August, 1856, in Montague, N.Y. He received the rudiments of his education in the public schools of Lewis county, N.Y.; and graduated from the academy at Carthage, N.Y. For four terms he taught school in Lewis county, N.Y.; and was a member of the board of education. He has attained prominence as a successful lawyer of Rapid City, S.D.; for two years was state's attorney; and for six years has been county judge. He has filled the office of chief of police; has been alderman, served as deputy-sheriflf; and has been chairman of the republican judicial central committee. He is the author of Lives of Grant, Sheridan, Sherman, and Emperor William I; History of the Crusades; Building and Ruling the Republic; Political History of the United States; and other works. Boyd, James Robert, clergyman, educator, author, was born in 1804 in Hunter, N.Y. He was professor of moral philosophy at Hamilton college for many years. He was the author of Elements of Rhetoric and Literary Criticism; Moral Philosophy; The Westminster Shorter Catechism, with Analysis; Elements of Logic; Last Days of a Christian Philosopher; and Memoir of Doddridge. He died Feb. 19, 1890, in Geneva, N.Y. Boyd, John Frank, lawyer, congressman, was born Aug. 8, 1853, in Connellsville, Pa. He taught district school one year. He practiced law five years in Galva, 111., and then moved to Oakdale, Neb. In 1888-96 he was county attorney; and in 1900 was elected judge of the district court for the ninth judicial district of Nebraska, and re-elected in 1903. In 1907-09 he was a representative from Nebraska to the sixtieth congress as a republican.
