Brainerdj Mrs. Eleanor Hojrt, journalist, author, was born in. 1868, in Iowa City, Iowa. For several years she was engaged in educational work; and since 1898 has been on the staff of the New York Sun. She is the author of the Misdemeanors of Nancy; Nancy's
County Christmas and Other Stories; Concerning Belinda; and Bettina. Brainerd, Ezra, educator, college president, was born Dec. 17, 1844, in St. Albans, Vt. In 1868-80 he was professor of rhetoric and English literature, and in 1880-85 he was professor of physics and applied mathematics at
Middlebury college; and since 1885 has been president of that institution. In 1887 he was a commissioner to revise the school laws of Vermont. Brainerd, Lawrence, United States senator. In 1854-55 he was a representative from Vermont to the United States senate to fill a vacancy. He died in Vermont. Brainerd, Samuel M., lawyer, congressman, was born Nov. 13, 1842, in Erie county, Pa. He received an academical education. Since 1869 he has practiced his profession in Erie, Pa. In 1872 he was elected district attorney of his county. In 1883-85 he was a representative from Pennsylvania to the forty-eighth congress as a republican. Brainerd, Thomas, clergyman, journalist, author, was bom June 17, 1804, in Leyden, N.Y. In 1833-36 he edited the Cincinnati Journal and the Youth's Magazine; and also assisted in editing the Presbyterian Quarterly Review. He died Aug. 21, 1866, in Scranton. Pa. He published a Life of John Brainerd. Brainerd, Thomas Chalmers, soldier, was born in Pennsylvania. In 1861 he entered the civil war as assistant surgeon; and in 1865 was brevetted captain and major for faithful and meritorious services. Braman, Benjamin, educator, journalist, was born Nov. 23, 1831, in Norton, Mass. In 1863-64 he was teaching at Astoria; and after that date taught drawing in the Cooper union and elsewhere in New York City. He is a skillful microscopist; and from its first issue has edited the Journal of the New York microscopical society, of which organization he has been president. microscopist,

He is the author of On Two Continents; and has contributed extensively to current literature. Braley, Henry King, lawyer, jurist, was born March 17, 1850, in Rochester, Mass. In 1873-91 he practiced law in Fall River, Mass. In 1874 was city solicitor; and in 1882-83 was mayor of that city. In 1891-1902 he was an associate justice of the superior court of Massachusetts; and since 1902 has been an associate justice of the supreme judicial court of Massachusetts.
Bramlette, Thpmas E., soldier, lawyer, jurgovernor, was born Jan. 3, 1817, in Cumberland county, Ky. He was attorney for the commonwealth in 1848-50. In 1856 he was elected judge of the sixth judicial district; and in 1861 resigned this office to enter the federal army as colonel of the third Kentucky infantry. He was United States district attorney; and in 1863-67 was the twenty-second governor of Kentucky. He died Jan. 12,

She is the author of Their Heart of the Road. Branch, Anthony Martin, soldier, lawyer, statesman, was born July 16, 1824, in Buckingham county, Va. Texas. Branch, John, lawyer, United States senator, governor, was born Nov. 4, 1782, in Halifax county, N.C. In 1811 he was elected a state senator; was re-elected every year until 1817; and then in 1817-20 became the twelfth governor of North Carolina. He again entered the state senate in 1822; and in 1823-29 he was United States senator. In 1829-31 he was secretary of the navy. In 1831-33 he was a representative from North Carolina to the twenty-second congress. In 1834 he was again elected to the state senate. In 1835 he was elected a member of the convention to revise the state constitjition and in 1844-45 was governor of the territory of Florida. He died Jan. 4, 1863, in Enfield, N.C.
